Greetings boys and ghouls and friends beyond the binary! I’m Dr. Jeanette A. Laredo, an independent scholar of all things awful including 18th-century British Gothic literature and Victorian horror.
I got my doctorate in English at the University of North Texas and wrote my dissertation, Reading the Ruptured Word: Detecting Trauma in Gothic Fiction from 1764-1853, on structural abnormalities in Gothic fiction as signifiers of trauma that characters within these texts seek to prevent or repair via detection.
I am the Coordinator of Academic Support Services at Tarrant County College’s Trinity River campus where I support the professional development of our faculty. Through TCC’s Connect online campus, I teach community college students about the Gothic and the importance of understanding what scares us.
